Humalog vs Novolog

Humalog and Novolog are fast-acting insulins that function for short periods. However, Humalog is prescribed for adults and children over three. On the other hand, Novolog is only approved for children as young as two years old.

Both are human insulin analogs, and their effects on diabetes treatment are similar. . You must note that Humalog and Novolog cannot be taken together as they can cause potential drug interactions. But, the two are usually included in a regimen with intermediate and/or long-acting insulins.

Difference Between Humalog and Novolog

Insulin lispro is sold under the brand name Humalog. Typically, you can experience the effects of   Humalog around 15 minutes after injection, peaks in about an hour, and continues to act for another 2 to 4 hours.

Meanwhile, Insulin Aspart is marketed under the brand name Novolog. NovoLog begins acting 15 minutes after injection, peaks in about an hour, and continues to work for 2 to 4 hours, similar to Humalog.

 

Side Effects

Most insulins have common side effects, which may include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Differences in Effectiveness Among People

A small study revealed no differences between Insulin lispro (Humalog) and Insulin Aspart (Novolog) in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Insulin levels in the blood were comparable 30 minutes after injection of either Lispro or Aspart, and both dissipated within 4 hours. Also, glucose, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism all showed similar impacts. Studies have determined that the clinical effects of Insulin Lispro and Insulin Aspart were indistinguishable.

Dosing guidelines vary between Humalog and Novolog.  Humalog is best taken 15 minutes before eating or immediately after eating. In contrast, Novolog is more effective when taken 5 to 10 minutes before eating or at the beginning of a meal.
