Grapefruit juice and Brilinta

You must avoid grapefruit juice while using Brilinta. One of the enzymes your body utilizes to break down Brilinta in the body can be blocked by grapefruit juice. In one clinical trial, ten healthy volunteers were given a 90 mg dose of ticagrelor on day three in addition to 200 ml of grapefruit juice or water three times a day for four days.

The researchers concluded that grapefruit juice significantly raised ticagrelor’s plasma concentrations and antiplatelet effect. This effect was most likely brought on by ticagrelor’s first pass CYP3A4 metabolism being inhibited (blocked), primarily at the gut level. The experts stated that avoiding combining ticagrelor with grapefruit juice is preferable while the patient is on this medication.

In most cases, taking Brilinta at a different time from consuming grapefruit juice will not stop the adverse interaction between the drink and the drug. Brilinta’s reactions to grapefruit juice can continue longer than 24 hours. With that, the bottom line is you should refrain from consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice for the duration of your treatment, even if you only take medication once daily.
